As Prince Harry's new bride, Meghan Markle approached her first birthday as a Royal, many people were speculating about how any celebration would compare to what she was accustomed to in her 'old' life. After all, there is a whole set of new rules and regulations that must be in effect for all occasions, and even though the Duchess is American by birth, she is now 'all Brit' as far as the citizens are concerned.
And she is being scrutinized constantly for any breaches in protocol that could bring embarrassment to or unwanted attention on to the Royal Family.
So on August 5th, as the newly-wed bride turned 37, she and her husband knew all eyes would be on them. The whole world was eager for a glimpse into the intimate workings of long-standing traditions like the birthday of a spouse. And right off the bat, the loving couple did something quite unconventional - by American standards, anyway - and attended a wedding!
Of course, Meghan couldn't really help it if a family member or close friend schedules their big day on her birthday, and it would be bad form to ditch the celebration for selfish reasons, so the Sussex couple made a glorious appearance - much to the delight of faithful fans!
"The Duchess and Duke of Sussex attended his longtime friend Charlie van Straubenzee's wedding to Daisy Jenks in Surrey, England on Saturday, which is Meghan's 37th birthday and her first as a member of the royal family. Harry served as best man."
To get an idea about how she has spent past birthdays, here is a message she wrote to herself four years ago. “I am 33 years old today. And I am happy. And I say that so plainly because, well…it takes time. To be happy. To figure out how to be kind to yourself. To not just choose that happiness, but to feel it.”
Little did she know at the time that her quest for happiness would take her on a most expected journey - alongside a real-life prince!
And this year, her first as the granddaughter-in-law of the Queen of England, one might wonder if Meghan would get a public acknowledgment from Her Majesty. Well, 'Grandma' did not disappoint!
The Queen tweeted a short and classically succinct message to Harry's new bride: "Happy Birthday to HRH The Duchess of Sussex! #HappyBirthdayHRH"
But it was the photo that she included in the post that tells the real story. In it is a delightful pic of the Queen and the Duchess sitting next to one another, laughing joyously in each other's company.
The snap was taken earlier this summer when Meghan and the Queen took their solo trip to Cheshire and it reveals what the nature of their relationship truly is.
'One picture is worth a thousand words,' they say - and in this case, the picture of Queen Elizabeth and the Duchess of Sussex speaks volumes!!
Happy Birthday, Duchess Meghan! We wish the very best in the year to come! It's sure to be an exciting one!!
