Recall: Popular Pet Food Brands Are Being Recalled After Dogs Die. Brand Tested Positive For Euthanasia Drug

After a family dog died from “unknown causes,” an investigation went underway that later recognized a popular dog food brands with a lethal ingredient. ABC7 conducted an investigation that found pentobarbital in several brands and types of dog food.

ABC7 shared that pentobarbital is recognized as a lethal drug, most commonly used to euthanize dogs, cats, and even horses. Pentobarbital is not permitted in animal foods, however, one pet consumer advocate cautioned that it’s not uncommon that “unusual ingredients” end up in dog food.

The same pet consumer advocate, Susan Thixon, cautioned buyers to do their research on the food that they feed their dog. It’s not something to take lightly.

The brand, Gravy Train, test positive for pentobarbital. Gravy Train is under the operation of the company Big Heart Pet Foods, which is under the ownership of Smucker’s. Other products by Big Heart Brands include Meow Mix, Milk- Bone, Kibbles’n Bits, 9 Lives, Natural Balance, Pup-Peroni, Nature’s Recipe, Canine Carry Outs, Milo’s Kitchen, Alley Cat, Jerky Treats, Meaty Bone, Pounce and Snausages.
