The world has always been under the impression that Prince Andrew and future (and now ex) wife Sarah Ferguson first met when they were introduced by Princess Diana who invited her to a party at Windsor Castle. However, thanks to this recently-unearthed snap, we see that the two had met before . . . a LONG time before.
In the delightfully innocent and quite revealing photograph, we find the Queen, with her trusty Corgi by her side, watching over a group of youngsters playing outside. The delightful, never-before-seen photo of the future Duke and Duchess of York as children came from a collection of photos taken by John Scott, whose actual name is Colonel Vassa Voynovich. He worked as the royal photographer during the 1950s, '60s, '70s, and '80s.
The group of lively kids in this particular snap includes Prince Andrew, at around 12 years of age. He is the broad-shouldered lad dressed in a blue turtleneck with his back to the camera. But he can be seen chatting with a cherubic red-haired little girl wearing a red turtleneck top and black pants, whose face we CAN see.
The youthful visage and short hairstyle of the future Duchess York might throw you off at first, but the flame-colored tresses and easy smile soon give her identity away.
Queen Elizabeth and Sarah’s mum, Susan Ferguson, stand watch over the fun-loving crew. Also in the little gang are Sarah’s sister Jane Ferguson and Andrew's brother Prince Edward, who plays with his cousin, Sarah Armstrong-Jones. The other children are not identified.
Little did either of the youngsters know at the time, but they were standing in the presence of their future spouses, with whom they would share two daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie. You can’t really see Andrew’s face in the pic, but from the look on little Sarah’s face, it’s obvious she is smitten. Could this be the meeting that started it all? I think so!!
The two lost touch sometime later, but destiny had its way when the two found each other once again so many years later. Andrew and Sarah went on to share an exciting, and sometimes turbulent, life together and remain great friends to this day.
It’s obvious from this photo that their connection was one of a kind. No wonder they couldn’t stay away from one another.
