Since then, Selena has become an international superstar. With more multiple Platinum and Gold albums, she’s become a sensation in the music industry. With all of her success came massive attention and in the last 15 years, the star has found privacy to be a luxury that she can longer afford.
In 2015, Selena publicly announced that she was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease known as Lupus. The constant attention of the media was taking a massive toll on her weakening body and the fight for her life became much more real that she had ever imagined. In 2017, Selena underwent surgery for a kidney transplant.
2018 has welcomed its own issues for Selena; the singer has been in a constant state of recovery- both physically and emotionally. After a rocky on and off again relationship, Selena and Justin Bieber began dating again. For the next several months, the endured good and bad times in their relationship but ultimately broke up in late August 2018.
Just weeks later, her former boyfriend was rumored to be dating his former girlfriend, Hailey Baldwin. Days later, they were engaged, and weeks after that, they secretly wed. Selena was shocked to say the very least.
Selena, who is known for her very transparent relationship with her fans on social media, took to Instagram to reveal that she needed some time away after receiving hurtful messages from critics. She wrote, “Update: taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi.”
Just days later, Selena suffered from issues related to her 2017 kidney transplant. While in the hospital, she also suffered from a crippling panic attack. After a year of confusing and difficult times, she and her family decided that it was time for her to receive that care that she desperately needed.
According to PEOPLE, Selena will be “undergoing dialectical behavior therapy, a therapy method designed to help try to identify, and then change, negative thinking and behavioral patterns.” Please keep her in your prayers; we were not created to be worshiped and Selena has been worshiped for so much her life. The constant attention and criticism has taken a massive toll on her life; please pray for freedom in her mental health and healing in her physical health.
