Selma Blair is no stranger to the silver screen. The incredibly talented actress has been taking the cinematic world by storm since the early 90s. Some of her most notable work is in Cruel Intentions (1999), Legally Blonde (2001), and The Sweetest Thing (2002).
As she’s grown and matured in life and in the industry, the 46-year-old has taken time away from her acting in spurts. Some understood it to be so that she could spend more time with her son, Arthur, while others simply assumed it was just to get away from the chaos that Hollywood brings.
Recently, Blair made the bold move to come forward with a confession. Since that day, millions of her fans have been in shock and heartbreak over her brutal utterance.
On January 14, Blair posted a selfie to her Instagram account. This image was a bit unlike others she’s posted in the past, causing many to do a double-take. In the image, Blair is seen with crumpled hair and wearing a thick, grey turtleneck all while cuddling a worn stuffed animal. Her caption of the image is what really drove it home.
“There is a truth with neurodegenerative brain disease. It is uncomfortable. It is a stadium of uncontrollable anxiety at times. Going out, being social holds a heavy price. My brain is on fire. I am freezing. We feel alone with it even though the loving support has been a Godsend and appreciated.”
The condition she describes is that of multiple sclerosis. She continued: “People write me asking how I do it. I do my best. But I choke with the pain of what I have lost and what I dare hope for and how challenging it is to walk around. But my smiles are genuine. This is ok. Life is an adventure with many shards of awakening.”
Her heartbreaking confession continued: “I can’t sleep at night but daytime I have trouble staying awake. I am a grown woman holding onto a bear that belonged to a sister-type of mine (thank you @k.d.w.r). We do what we can. I have a full week of appointments and things to look forward to. But like many of us, I am praying. Soaking in love where I can. It’s not easy. That’s okay. I send love to you.”
Just one day following her confession, she received over 45,000 likes and equal amounts of comments full of fans cheering her on and standing with her in her battle. One user encouragingly commented: “You’re such a strong woman, even on those trying days. You are your own General in the battle w/ MS. You focus on the daily battle to win and make it through each day, all the while, looking ahead at how to set up defenses on what might come next. No matter how good or bad your day is, the light in your eyes never dims. You know you’re strong and refuse to let anything keep you down. Never give up. You have your army all around you to help you when you need it.”
While we know she’s certainly not alone in this battle, it is refreshing to see one of Hollywood’s greats step up and be vulnerable. Our thoughts and prayers are with Blair as she navigates her painful battle.
