Spice Up Your Weeknight Meal By Making Slow Cooker General Tso’s Chicken

November 29, 2018

One of my favorite things to do is get creative in the kitchen. While it can be pretty easy to get stuck in the day-to-day routines and follow typical, tried and true recipes, it’s always fun to spice things up a bit and make something totally unexpected and unique!

Obviously, you don’t want to go too out-of-the-box if you have pickier family members in your home as I do, so you have to go about it a little bit differently.

I always try to find what dishes my family likes to order when we dine out and find inventive ways to recreate their favorites for them. I recently found a recipe that I knew my husband would absolutely go nuts over.

He loves Asian cuisine, so when I found a version of General Tso’s chicken on Alyssa’s blog, The Recipe Critic, I was instantly drawn to it. Upon reading it, I grew even happier with my finding. To make this ever-popular dish, you only need a few ingredients and your slow cooker!

Not only will you get the sweet and savory flavors of this mouthwatering dish, but you’ll also save an incredible amount of time in the kitchen prepping your food. Make the sauce, add it all in the slow cooker, and let it take care of the rest.

It’s as quick as takeout (if you plan it appropriately) but only made with the best ingredients. That’s a total win in my book! Check out the recipe below to see just how to make Slow Cooker General Tso’s Chicken at home.

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
¾ c. cornstarch
1 tbsp. Vegetable oil
½ c. hoisin sauce
2 tbsp. Soy sauce
½ c. brown sugar
3 cloves garlic, minced
3 tbsp. Rice wine vinegar
1 tsp. Sesame oil
¼ tsp. Dry ginger
½ tsp. Crushed red pepper
Green onions, sesame seeds, and additional red pepper flakes for garnish

In a bowl, combine chicken and cornstarch. Toss until the chicken is evenly coated. Heat a medium skillet over medium-high heat and add oil. Once hot, add in chicken and cook until it is lightly browned but not cooked throughout. Add to your slow cooker.

In a small bowl, mix together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, and crushed red pepper. Pour atop the chicken. Cook on low for 3-4 hours or until chicken is cooked thoroughly. Serve with rice and garnish to your liking.
