Someone Actually Calculated How Much Money Kevin's Dad Spent in "Home Alone" and It Will Blow Your Mind!

December 27, 2016

As a child, you watch Home Alone 1 and 2 in wide-eyed wonderment at the hilarious story lines and magical whimsy of Christmas. It also showcases just how important family is, even if they do drive you bonkers.

When you watch the film as an adult, though, you tend to have a few more questions. This one in particular:

I mean, let's get real here! This house that was used in the movie was sold for $1.585 million in 2012.

In the movie, the writers never reveal what it is that Mr. McCallister actually does for a living. One thing we do know is that it must be pretty darn snazzy.

While watching the movie, one viewer decided to calculate just how much money was spent by Mr. McCallister during the film's duration. Here's the breakdown:

Home Alone, 1990

1. 15 tickets from Chicago to Paris at Christmas; 11 coach and four first-class tickets for the adults.

A roundtrip flight on American Airlines (the airline they flew on in the movie), would cost them $35,320

2. 10 Boxes of pizza that was paid for in cash.

The pizza delivery guy told them that for their large stack of pizzas, the grand total was $122.50.

3. Replacement of the basement stairs.

Considering the things that Kevin destroyed while staying alone, his dad would certainly have to replace the staircase that he doused in tar, the shelves he tore down in Buzz's room. The cost for both of those would ranged between $900-$1,500 at the least.

Home Alone 2, 1992

4. 14 airline tickets from Chicago to Miami at Christmas; 10 coach and four first-class for the adults again.

The cost for this would be roughly $9,927.

5. One night in the Plaza Hotel's "finest suites".

Most likely, Kevin would have been placed in a one-bedroom penthouse suite, which includes butler service and is $2,915 for the night.

6. A night in one of Miami's shady motels, the Villa de Dolphine.

While this motel is fictional, a motel that is equally as shady as this would cost around $99 per night during the time this movie was filmed. For a family the size of the Mcallister's, you'd need at least seven beds, making the total around $693.

7. A toy from Duncan's Toy Chest.

The toy cost $23.75, but in today's standards, that would be $40.86.

8. 13 tickets from New York to Miami on Christmas Eve.

Since it was a one-way flight, the total would have been $1,872. If they all returned, however, it would be an additional $3,150

9. Two-dozen cans of paint.

And at $45 a can, all that wastefulness would come up to around $1,000.

10. Room service at the Plaza Hotel.

We learn from his dad's total freakout that Kevin spent $967.43 on room service while staying at the Plaza, but today, that price would be $1,659.33.

All together, the grand total comes up somewhere in the range of $21,257 for only the Home Alone 2 movie.

While some internet sources speculate that the only way they could have afforded that is if his father was probably a mobster, we think that he just really liked to treat his family. And by treat, we mean spend oodles and oodles of cash for lavish living. But that's neither here nor there...

Nevertheless, it is pretty neat to see a breakdown of the costs!
