The Best Kept Secrets Of Princess Diana On The Day Of Her Wedding

December 20, 2017

Princess Diana was known and loved for many things; her heart towards the common world was gentle, her love for her two children was public, and her role in Britain's Royal Family truly went beyond borders as the world fell for Princess Di.

The princess had several secrets, many of which have surfaced since her tragic death in 1997. Some are personal, but some are fun! For instance, on the day of Princess Di’s wedding to Prince Charles, the princess-to-be made sure to keep much of the world in the dark about her wedding details.

Princess Diana was well-known for her unconventional practices as a member of the Royal family, but on her big day, she followed the fairytale checklist of “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” The fabric for her gown was spun specifically for the Royal wedding and the lacing was taken from scraps that were purchased at an auction and donated from the Royal School of Needlework. There was also a small blue bow on the back of the dress. Lastly, the Princess borrowed a tiara from her maiden-family, the Spencers.

The designers of the dress, David Emanuel and his wife Elizabeth, were honored to be chosen as the dress designers. They knew they had their work cut out for them, but they didn’t realize that the dress would be such a massive project. Each time Diana had a dress fitting, she would ask for a longer and longer train. And of course, the designers couldn’t say no to the princess!

The gown, clearly magnificent, turned out to be an enormous feat. Actually, the Princess-to-be almost didn’t make it to the wedding in her carriage because her dress was too big! The dress ended up getting stuck in the carriage and wrinkled quite badly. However, no number of wrinkles could take away from the beauty of the gown.

Like any bride, desires for wedding-day bliss were constantly battling worst-case scenarios. In fact, Diana even had a backup gown made just in case. The reason for this was simple; Diana wanted the day to be a shock to all. She was worried that the secret of her dream dress would get leaked to the press, in which case, she would ditch the first dress and wear the backup dress. The designers even added heavy-duty blinds to the windows and a safe to secure the fabric swatches and sketches.

Luckily, the dress was never leaked, so she went with her original choice. The designers quickly disposed of the spare gown, and still, to this day, the dress has not been claimed. However, in 2005, a mystery dress appeared at an auction, and it's been rumored to have been the backup dress. Elizabeth Emanuel has not given any comment regarding the rumored backup dress.

The wedding day, even though it was full of secrets, went off without any real hitch. The day was beautiful and full of joy!
