Late last month the Memphis Zoo welcomed a new baby on the scene. That baby was, a not so little, baby hippopotamus! The zoo's newest baby girl was born on March 23rd at around 6:18 AM and weighed in at a whopping 76 pounds at birth! The baby's mom is 19 year old Binti and her dad is 16 year old Uzazi.
“Binti is an extremely attentive mother, and is very protective of her calf,” said Farshid Mehrdadfar, Curator of West Zone. “The little lady follows her mom around everywhere, and you can typically find her asleep on Binti’s nose or back.” -Via Memphis Zoo
