Now that Spring is here and Summer right around the corner, many of us are getting outside more and more. The warm breezes and bright sunshine are enticing and invigorating to those of us who’ve spent much of the past few months indoors. The Royal Family is no different, as they excitedly embrace more frequent outdoor events.
With increased outdoor activity, certain precautions need to be taken to protect ourselves from the harsh, albeit inviting, elements that await us just outside the front door. Most important of these has to be sunscreen, especially for those of us who live in places that have true winter, leaving us with the characteristic pasty, white skin that results from huddling indoors to escape the bitter cold of winter.
Besides our skin, there is another part of our bodies that demands attention - our eyes. And Queen Elizabeth has proven herself quite clever in that regard, as many of us have noticed in recent weeks.
I’m talking, of course, about the stylish sunglasses that Her Majesty has taken to sporting lately during her public appearances. Not only does she look chic and ‘cool,’ she also demonstrates her practical side as well.
Hello! Magazine breaks it down for us this way: “When the Queen stepped out for the Epsom races last week, she demonstrated exactly why her sunglasses are not just cool but also practical! Like many grandmothers, the royal knows the value of photochromic lenses – clear eyeglasses that transition to sunglasses when activated by the sun's UV rays.
“The Queen arrived at the Epsom Derby Festival on June 2 in a cheery lavender suit and hat adorned with red and white blooms. Along with her signature accessories – low-heeled shoes, gloves and message-sending leather handbag – the monarch also was wearing her trusty eyeglasses.” If you look closely, you can see the progress the glasses as they changed from clear to darkened.
While we admire the Queen’s dedication to the health of her eyesight, some are worried that her taking to wearing sunglasses all the time might indicate a more serious condition that would require the avoidance of sunlight exposure. When, just one year ago, photos of her outdoors show no sign of the eyewear.
But, for now, we choose to believe that she is just doing what millions of other people do to prevent that annoying glare that seems so prevalent during the spring and summer months.
As the Monarch carries out her duties at a remarkable 92 years of age, we can detect no sign of her slowing down any time soon and are just happy that she is finding it agreeable to make so many public appearances. And seeing her in those adorable sunnies just puts a huge smile on our faces!
