Families come in all shapes and sizes. You don't have to look alike to be family and, in this case, you don't even have to be the same species. As long as I can remember, I've always wanted to adopt, so this story is very dear to my heart.

Ronan and Emma Lally run a farm in Clare County, Offaly, in Ireland. One day their ducklings went missing, and they assumed the worst. Their fear was that their cat had eaten them. They followed their cat and got the shock of their life.

The couple had a lovely collection of animals but wanted some chickens to go along with all the animals at the farm. So, the couple bought some fertilized eggs, and the day finally arrived when the eggs hatched. Ronan went to check on the newly-hatched chicks and found that they were missing.

Right then a cat jumped out of the barn, and Ronan's heart sank. Certain that the cat had made a tasty meal out of the new fuzzy babies, Ronan followed her to a secluded corner of the farm. He was beyond surprised to learn that their cat had taken in the ducklings as her own; they were snuggled up next to this mama cat, right alongside her kittens. The crazy thing is that the ducklings were actually nursing, right along with the newborn kittens - and ducklings don't drink milk!

Their cat had recently had kittens when she discovered the baby chicks. "The minute the cat lay down, the three ducklings ran underneath her. She started to purr," Ronan said.

The chicks and the kittens have grown up together but the funny thing is that chicks grow faster than kittens and you can notice the dramatic difference. They are still as close as ever, and mama cat loves them all equally!
