While Officer John Shipman is finishing up his route around two o'clock one morning, he sees something out-of-the-ordinary. He sees a young man walking in the freezing, 19-degree, weather. Because of the time of day and the lack of pedestrians in this location, Officer Shipman decides to pull over and investigate the situation a bit. When he talks to the young man, James Taylor, he realizes that he simply needs a ride. James tells him that he currently works at McDonald's to pay for his college tuition but has no transportation.

Each day, James makes the 45-minute walk from his home to work. Officer Shipman can see the sincerity in the young man’s eyes as he continues to tell that his driving force for his work is knowing that he can also assist his single mom. Though she works long hours at her own job, she still struggles financially. After dropping James off, safely at his home, he can’t seem to shake the thought of the determined, kind-hearted young man. He knows he has to do something to help him. When he arrives back at his own home, he takes to Facebook to spread awareness about James’ situation.

In no time at all, the townspeople raise enough money to help James afford a vehicle of his own and to help with other expenses. The two are quite close in friendship now, and Officer Shipman and James talk quite regularly. Their heartwarming story gained enough attention on the internet that they were brought to The Ellen Show. Here, they both receive surprises they never could have imagined. Check out the video, below, to see just what Ellen does for these gentlemen.
