Off the coast of Maui, Hawaii lies a magnificent area known as the Molokini Crater. In the morning, you can find truly spectacular snorkeling at the crater, which teems with ocean life. When the afternoon breezes blow in, it can be hard to stay afloat among the heavy, choppy waves, leaving nature free to be herself without observers.
As Kelly Bryce worked on a snorkeling tour for the Redline Rafting charter boat, they came across a magnificent sight. A 35-foot humpback whale swam along with the boat and began to breach near them. Humpback whales migrate to the area every year to give birth to their calves, so it’s not unusual to see these magnificent creatures there.
What is unusual, however, is to see these spectacular animals come so close to a boat, they were almost within arm’s reach of the chartered boat. The whale checked them out, hanging nearby for just a little while before deciding it was time to move on and leaving the boat behind. The snorkelers surely got the memory of the life from their little trip.
