On May 19th, 2018, two faces had the world's attention- Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. As the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex captivated millions, one face in the audience managed to cause quite a stir amongst Royal fans.

Chelsy Davy attended Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in a dark navy blue dress and cape. And while her color scheme was not one of mourning, it was difficult to believe if Chelsey witnessed her former boyfriend of nearly a decade marry another woman.

Prince Harry and Chelsy met in 2004 and immediately fell for each other. There was no denying their affection for one another, however, during their more than a 10-year on-again-off-again relationship, Chelsy officially ended things with Prince Harry in 2015. For years, fans were led to believe that the press and paparazzi of Royalty was something that Chelsy didn’t want to live with. One source simply put, “Chelsy is her own woman.”

Now, three years after their breakup and a Royal wedding later, the truth about Chelsy’s decision to walk away from a “fairytale” is revealed- and it has everything to do with her could-have-been inlaws.

During Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011, Prince Harry invited Chelsy to be his date. During the most one of the most iconic weddings in Royal history, Chelsy watched the fandom and the enormous splendor of the day unravel in a truly overwhelming way. As she witnessed hundreds of thousands cheer on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, she had no desire for that life one day. She ended things with Prince Harry immediately after.

While they continued their on-and-off again romance for nearly four years later, it was the 2011 Royal Wedding that made it abundantly clear to Chelsy. According to the author of Harry: Conversations with the Prince, Angela Levin, a friend revealed William and Kate’s wedding “Convinced Chelsy that she and Harry had been right to separate,” wrote Levin. “Although they had a lot in common, she saw clearly that because they came from such different worlds it could never have worked, especially as she valued her privacy and guarded it so carefully.”

As each other’s first true loves, Harry felt it necessary to invite Chelsy to his wedding to Meghan Markle in May. Just the night before the nuptials, Harry and Chelsy shared a highly emotional phone call that nearly caused Chelsy to not attend the wedding. But on the morning of, Chelsy put her best face forward and attended the wedding.

There’s no doubt it was difficult for Chelsy to watch the man that she had spent more than 10 years with marrying another woman, but nonetheless she was brave on the day and attended the wedding to support her friend marry the love of his life.
