Now that we know the new Royal baby is not a girl, half of the top names have suddenly fallen off the list of likely monikers for the new arrival. For a boy, the name Edward has been at the top for quite some time, at 8/1 odds (when compared to the entire list, including girls names) with Arthur a safe distance behind.
It seemed likely that, if a boy, the new baby would share a name with great uncle Edward, the Earl of Wessex. But now, as of Monday afternoon, that’s all changed and many people are surprised with how much the rankings have changed in such a short time since the actual birth.
Surprisingly, the name, Edward is no longer the favorite, falling to 9/1 odds behind Arthur at 2/1 odds. In fact, a new name has risen to second place at 4/1 odds and that one, I think, is what it will actually turn out to be.
According to independent, “When it comes to boys names, Edward has been by far the most popular selection at eight to one, with Arthur fancied too. Speaking to our traders, Edward has edged the betting in terms of the actual amount of bets on the name,” a spokesman for Paddy Power Betfair said.
But many believe Fredrick, as well as variations including Fred/Frederick, are also a likely possibility - with 8/1 odds the baby will be named after the former Prince of Wales. (Frederick, Prince of Wales was the oldest son of King George II but died in 1727 and the Throne passed to his younger brother, George III.)
Other possible, but unlikely choices for the new prince include Thomas, Philip, Jack, or Henry.
We shouldn’t have too long to wait, though. Although we were expecting the name to be released on Wednesday, two days after the baby was born (the names of both Prince George and Princess Charlotte were revealed two days ofter their births), there was a delay due to Charles, the Prince of Wales and grandfather to the new baby, being out of the country for the birth.
It is speculated that the family wished to wait until after he returned and had a chance to meet the little prince, before sharing the baby's name with the rest of the world. Now, experts are saying Thursday is the day. If all goes well, we should know later today or by Friday at the latest.
Now, all that's left is the guessing. The top of the list is still Arthur, followed closely by James. What do you think it will be? My money's on James. We'll have to wait and see!
