Growing up in the South, I had the privilege of eating an abundance of delicious desserts such as pies, pastries, cakes, and cobblers. My grandmothers were known around town for their excellent baking skills and they went all out for every occasion.
It was a typical sight to see six or seven dessert options at a Sunday brunch. Why so many? Because they wanted to, that's why. My question is, why not?! In my book, there's no such thing as too many desserts.
We had things such as carrot cake, cherry pie, pineapple upside down cake, apple crisps, and so much more. I always would get a teeny portion of each dessert so that I could sample them all. My favorites were always the crispy, buttery, fruit-filled options. There was nothing more satisfying on a hot summer evening than to sit at the picnic table and devour a delicious dessert with a big scoop of homemade ice cream.
My mother also is an excellent cook and contributed mainly to the savory dishes. She had a dessert she would always bring with her to family gatherings and it was an absolute hit each and every time. While it was rather simple to construct, it surely didn't lack in the flavor department! Her specialty was apple dumplings and they were SO GOOD. Just the thought of them instantly makes my mouth water.
