It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood for Mr. Rogers fans! A biopic of his life will begin filming later this year, and the perfect person has been cast as our beloved childhood hero.
That person, of course, is none other than Oscar-Award winning actor, Tom Hanks! Tom Hanks is an incredible actor known for movies like “Big,” “Sleepless in Seattle,” “Forrest Gump,” and my personal favorite, “You've Got Mail.” Not to mention he also voices everyone's favorite cowboy, Woody, in Disney's “Toy Story” series!
The movie titled “You Are My Friend” will be a biopic of Fred Rogers’ life and is said to be based on the relationship between Fred and Tom Junod, a cynical journalist who wrote a piece on Rogers in 1998 for Esquire magazine, and the friendship that developed from that.
Here is what director Marielle Heller told Variety about her upcoming film: “I’m thrilled to be making ‘You Are My Friend,'” Heller said. “The script knocked me out with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit. As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and, as a human, I am in awe of his life’s work. I can’t wait to bring his story to the public and be a part of such a thoughtful, smart group of people who are all coming together to make this film, which truly feels to me like an antidote to our very fractured culture.”
I can think of no one better to play a man who is so well-known for his genuine kindness and relatability. What a wonderful choice! This is one movie that I will be checking out. Will you watch this movie? Do you think Tom Hanks will do the role of Mr. Rogers justice?
