When Rescuers Saw What This Coyote Puppy Got Himself Into, They Knew He Needed Serious Help
Coyotes are arguably one of the most disliked wild animals in the United States right now. As we move further and further into their habitat we force these mischievous creatures into more and more interaction with us and our pets. Sadly for everyone, these interactions don’t typically end on a positive note. Although they are commonly hated, three heroes came to the rescue of a coyote puppy who had gone himself into a real pickle.
Gwen Maxwell is an 86 year old retired school teacher who lives in Sun City West, Arizona. One morning she heard quite an unusual sound coming from her yard and she naturally went to investigate. She followed the cries to what she thought was a puppy. She was half correct, as while it was a puppy, it was in fact a coyote puppy. The poor thing was covered in cholla cactus chunks.
The suffering pup limped his way to the nearby golf course, Pebblebrook Golf Course, and Gwen followed along, calling for help. A maintenance worker, Jose Soto, and assistant superintendent overheard the cries and came to the puppy’s rescue.
Jose held the puppy while Shawn pulled the cholla cactus spines out of the puppy! Some of the spines were embedded at least a quarter of an inch into his skin all around his face and legs. The poor puppy never fought the people while they fixed him up and gently pulled the sharp spines from his body. There were even spines stuck inside of his mouth.
Jose and Shawn worked hard to save the life of this pup who would surely have died without their intervention. While they worked, the mother waited nearby and watched anxiously. Although she was clearly nervous, she never attacked or even growled at the men while they were saving her puppy. It was as if she knew that they were saving his life.
When the puppy was completely free of stickers, they set him near his mother and he was able to reunite with his mom and four siblings. Mom led her family back into the brush after, and hopefully that trouble making puppy keeps his nose clean!
Jose and Shawn are lovers of animals and this isn’t their first rescue together. Last year, a young hawk that was too young to fly had fallen from his nest and the two worked together to save the little guy’s life.
