It is safe to say that animals are far wiser than we give them credit for. I am not simply talking about animals that learn new tricks and make us smile. I'm talking about the fact that many animals, at times, are able to show emotions that rival that of human beings. Rocky, a beautiful and kind-hearted orangutan, is one such animal. He shows us that emotions, like empathy and love, transcend the line between the human and animal kingdoms. Rocky, and other animals like him, seem to know exactly how we are feeling and, what's more, they want to help in any way they can.
Rocky shows us just how empathetic animals can be, when a group of people approach him in his enclosure at a zoo in Indiana. Rocky is used to being looked at by groups of people but, on this day, one woman in the crowd catches Rocky's eye. Rocky comes right up to the glass of his enclosure and signals for the woman to come closer. The woman has severe burns and scarring and Rocky wants to take a closer look. People around look on in amazement as the woman approaches, and shows Rocky some of her burns. Then Rocky points at the woman as if to say, "Show me the one on your neck."
The woman and the others around her are shocked at how perceptive and curious Rocky is. Over and over again, Rocky points to different burns on the woman's body so he can see them more closely. After each burn is shown to him, the orangutan looks at the woman with such tenderness and compassion. It's almost as if he wants to say, "I'm sorry for what happened to you, but it is going to be ok." The woman is overjoyed by her experience and knows that she and Rocky are making a genuine connection, one that she will remember for the rest of her life! Watch the video, below, to see the amazing encounter.
