For one Connecticut family, adopting their dog Duke six years ago brought more than they ever expected. Little did they know at the time, that they would be taking in not only a lovable family pet but also an amazing hero!!
But that's exactly what they did. One night, Janet Brousseau and her husband had just gone to bed and were drifting off to sleep when they were startled awake by their German Shepherd-mix, Duke. He had barged through their door and jumped on their bed and was "shaking so uncontrollably that it woke them up," said Janet.
They knew something was wrong because Duke had never displayed any such behavior in the past. "He is insanely obedient," reported Janet, "so this was extremely bizarre."
Being new parents, the couple's first thought, of course, was for their nine-week-old daughter, Harper, who was sleeping in the next room. Hopping out of bed, they dashed in to check on her. Unbelievably, the baby was not breathing!!
They immediately called 9-1-1 and began resuscitation efforts. Harper came around quickly and the parents breathed a sigh of relief.
After the harrowing experience, the Brousseaus came to the stunning realization that Duke had actually saved the baby's life. "He's such a good boy," says Janet. If he hadn't alerted him in such an uncharacteristic way, they might have ignored him and gone to sleep.
I'll bet this is one family that believes wholeheartedly in pet adoption and would highly recommend it to anyone who asked. After all, if they hadn't gone to the shelter that day, there might have been a much sadder ending to this story!
