Prince Harry is making things very clear to social media users.
It wasn’t long after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got engaged in November 2017 that Meghan began receiving online backlash. Even before their engagement, Meghan was the topic of online bullying. However, she chose to ignore it. But once she was officially engaged to marry into the most famous family in the world, the criticism became difficult to ignore.
Every day, media outlets would publish mistruths about Meghan Markle. 2018 proved to be a year full of celebrations for Meghan as she became a wife, the Duchess of Sussex, and even announced that she was pregnant with her first child. But despite the many reasons to be happy, online bullies made it their mission to attack Meghan during what should have been the most joyous season of her life.
Being Royals, Prince Harry and Meghan knew that they couldn’t clap back at haters, trolls, bullies, and critics. Instead, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to lead in love. While the comments only increased, Harry and Meghan have continued to demonstrate maturity and love.
But on March 6th, 2019, Prince Harry had an opportunity to speak up regarding the power of social media and the effects of online bullying. And you can bet your bottom dollar he took the opportunity to set the record straight.
At the WE Day event hosted for the Free The Children, which helps to inspire increased awareness of good citizenship in young people around the world. During Harry’s speech, he made sure to shine light on the right way to navigate bullying and even gave special credit to his wife.
Prince Harry said, “If we look at the world we’re living in, I know it can feel challenging sometimes — but your role is to shine the light. Every day you are inundated with overexposure of advertising and mainstream media, social media and endless comparisons, distorting the truth, and trying to manipulate the power of positive thinking. But you don’t let them sway you.”
He added, “Because you don’t need to hide behind your device to share your voice. You confidently voice your opinions because you can embrace them proudly.” Harry then introduced his Meghan by saying that she often reminds him of “one of her favorite quotes by Martin Luther King Jr. ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.’”
The crowd cheered in hysteria as many were aware of the personal relevance this topic had to Prince Harry and his family. Before he finished up, he invited Meghan up. The crowd went wild as Meghan timidly approached her husband. Evidently, she was grateful for him sticking up for her.
Prince Harry’s message was direct: Choose love, not hate. As onlookers, it's so crucial for us to offer up kindness. Remember that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are real people and rather than attacking them for their lives, let them be who they are and be kind. I am proud of Prince Harry for speaking up in such a respectful way!
