The blustery winter months are notorious for leaving us with dry, cracked, and scaly skin. It seems that no matter what, no amount of moisture and lotions can soothe the irritation that the bone-chilling cold brings. If that weren't enough, sickness lurks around each and every corner. Everyone tries to stay as healthy as possible but sometimes even the most prepared individuals are struck with the dreaded illnesses. Colds, pneumonia, and cases of flu run rampant, affecting both young and old.
This winter season, another illness has surfaced called Legionnaires’ Disease and it’s one that we should all be aware of. It’s a severe and more harmful form of pneumonia, causing inflammation in the lungs due to bacteria. This sickness results in hospitalization and, in some cases, death.
Symptoms of this illness are very similar to common pneumonia where one will exhibit high fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, headaches, confusion, and diarrhea. It isn’t contracted through person-to-person contact but by inhaling the bacteria which can be found in water systems, hot tubs, and air conditioning systems.
While it can be a bit tricky to avoid because of its severity, it is possible. You must take extreme caution and meticulously clean water systems, pools, and the like. If you’re a smoker, take extra precautions. Those who smoke have a greater risk of catching this dreaded sickness. If these symptoms sound familiar to you, give your local physician a call and knock out this burden before it gets any worse.
