When the London Zoo’s 4-year-old Okapi Oni gave birth in December, the zoo immediately knew just what to name the little girl! To show their support about the upcoming wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the zoo decided to name her Meghan! Little Meghan is now a beloved part of the zoo, and the zoo hopes that the attention she brings will draw attention to the plight of the Okapi!
Okapis are rather wonderful animals that are native to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The magnificent creatures are commonly called a zebra giraffe or forest giraffe, and people tend to fall head over heels for the animals because of their striped legs that look so much like a zebra! Okapis are an extremely endangered species, and the zoo hopes that more people will take interest in this fascinating animal!
There has been no word yet on whether Meghan Markle has popped down to the London Zoo to meet her new namesake, but we’re sure that she can’t wait to meet this adorable little girl! We wish little Meghan the best and hope she lives the best little Okapi life that any Okapi could ask for!
