16-year-old Maarib Al Hishmawi ran away from her parents home on January 30 after leaving William Howard Taft High School where she was a bright student. Police did their best to find her, and her parents, 34-year-old Abdulah Fami Kala Al Hishmawi, and 33-year-old Hamdiyah Sabah Al Hishmawi, even went on live television begging their daughter to come home.
In mid-March police finally tracked Maarib down where she had been hiding in the care of an organization. When police began to question her disappearance, they discovered the horrifying reason she had run away. Her parents had set up an arranged marriage for her, and her family was going to be paid $20,000 as part of the agreement. When Maarib refused the marriage, she was savagely beaten.
Hot oil was thrown at her and she was beaten with broomsticks. She was even choked to the point where she was almost left unconscious. As soon as police discovered the horrible truth, they placed Maarib and her five siblings into CPS care and her parents have been arrested and charged with a felony count of continuous family violence. The man she was set to marry may also face charges. Hopefully, Maarib and her siblings will now have the chance to live the lives they deserve.
This is a horrible story, and we know that sometimes we need a reminder of the good in the world at a time like this, so be sure to check out the video below!
