Student Tried to Quit Band Because of His Disability But His Teacher Had Other Plans

November 17, 2016

Ethan Och has spinal muscular atrophy, causing his involvement in band to be extremely difficult. "I was lagging behind...and they were going ahead of me. There was no way for me to catch up with them." His band teacher had made some adjustments for him to be able to play drums easier but nothing seemed to work. Ethan sadly met with his teacher and broke the news that he would have to quit. Thankfully, his teacher wouldn't let him quit that easily. She spent the following days doing research on what would work best for him. She discovered some apps on her smartphone that would enable Ethan to still participate in the band using a method that would be easier for him - drums on an iPad hooked up to an amplifier.

Since this discovery, Ethan has been excelling tremendously and couldn't be happier and more grateful for his wonderful teacher who chose to go the extra mile for her student. "He's part of the team. You don't leave somebody behind."
